Dr. Cady (Blackey) Brown
As a native Lexingtonian, I spent my early childhood downtown and later moved with my parents and three sisters to a farm in Versailles. I attended Sayre for high school, where my mom continues to teach. My earliest interests in medicine were that of the equine nature, when I would ride farm-to-farm with my dad on his veterinary rounds. But History was always my academic love, enough so that I chose to major in East Asian History at Davidson College. My early years at Davidson were spent writing papers and devoting myself to the varsity soccer team. My original interest in medicine piqued again when I studied abroad. I chose China so I could participate in a program focused on Traditional Chinese Medicine. After this experience, I changed career arcs and applied to medical school.
I attended the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. When it became time to choose a specialty, I knew I wanted something that would allow me to create long-lasting relationships with my patients. I also wanted to consider the whole patient, not just one organ system or area of the body. Internal Medicine provided the perfect residency for me, which I did at Tulane University in New Orleans.
I have been in private practice primary care for the last seven years. In my leisure time, I really enjoy being outside. This includes running downtown, and going to local parks with my kids. I love to garden in my front yard and visit with neighbors while my children, Nettie and Chet, play. We often take weekend adventures to my parents’ farm to fish, creek-walk or ice skate. I have a real passion for creating things, whether that be cooking, making jewelry or knitting. My ideal end to any day is enjoying a home-cooked dinner on the porch with my family; a mix of the things I most love — family, food, and the outdoors.
Downtown Drs. Brown allows me to practice as my best by creating strong relationships and focusing on the root of health issues. My goal is to help patients with their health and wellness so they may pursue whatever it is they most enjoy.

Dr. Ryan Brown
I am a born and raised Kentuckian. I grew up on a farm in Henderson with horses, cattle and a large pond for swimming and fishing. As a child, I lived on the basketball court and golf course. Seldom did I venture inside.
Using a spot on the golf team as a gateway to the West, I attended the University of California, San Diego where I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology. I obtained my medical degree at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, which is also where Cady and I met. We went south together, where I completed an internal medicine residency at Tulane University in New Orleans. It is in New Orleans where I began to learn the nuance and art of medicine. And the city will always tug at my heartstrings like no other — Cady and I married on a sunny January afternoon there. One year later, our daughter Nettie was born.
After completing an extra year as a Chief Resident at Tulane, I returned home to Kentucky. Our family now includes my son, Chet. The four of us spend lots of time together, usually outdoors, as our family genetic preference for this seems to be strong. Over the last few years, I’ve enjoyed returning to personal hobbies I set aside during training, as well as cultivating a few new ones. I am resurrecting my golf game. I always get a few ski days in each winter. I exercise routinely for enjoyment and sanity. Movies are my preferred art form. I read the newspaper daily, and lately, I spend a lot of time drinking really good coffee.
I went to medical school because I simply wanted a job that would allow me to have an important impact on people’s lives. I chose the field of primary care because no other type of medicine provides as intimate a physician-patient relationship. After several years of practicing in a hospital-owned practice, I have found the time and space needed to do my job at its highest level is not available. Downtown Drs. Brown provides the venue to treat patients the way I feel they should be treated: with complete attention and compassion, and no eye on the clock.
